Tough toys?

Hey all!

I'm wondering if anyone would have suggestions for super resistant dog toys? For large breed dogs.

I've tried nearly everything from the "KONG" line...  and even that they go through in a matter of hours =(
It takes the larger dog about an hour to completly devour the end of a beef femur. (dont worry i dont let her go throug it in one sitting, i take it away after about, 10 minutes and give it back on later days)

We have a wood stove and have some of the wood stacked inside, they grab pieces of wood from the pile and chew those. they are both good and dont swallow pieces... and it lasts longer then anything else... but it dont know if it's ok for them to chew that though.....?

lol... tire toy still help up all day yesterday... and it had a schnauzer attached to it for the better part of the day =)

Peek, I think those are the latex toys? I have one here.. it's a moose... lol i bought it MONTHS ago.... both dogs are terrified of it... very odd.... absolutly hilarious though... it's now in our porch and if the dane sees it she RUNS by... if the shepherd sees it she barks her head off. lol But i think the dane "learned" to be affraid of it... from the shepherd... if thats even possible.

The GALILEO nylabones are good... but very heavy and loud when they get tossed around. I was watching the shepherd chew for a while last night... she goes through everything so fast (i think) because she doesnt give up... once she's got it, her only purpose in life is to destroy it.... bugger. oh well

I need more coffee before i can think straight =P

Isn't that strange about the tire toy!  I've tried those, and our youngest Dobe can destroy one in one afternoon.

Yet for use, the giant size nylabones work well.

And here's another oddity:  Those really cheap squeaky rubber toys that look like your dog would eat them in 5 seconds?  We have 2 that the dogs have never punctured.  They love the squeek, and gently carry them around the house, squeeking.  They chew them, but very gently as if they "know" if they puncture it or chew a hole in it, the squeeker won't work.

go figure!

lol they sure are

No, winter isnt easy here with them, they arent getting nearly enough excersize!! the Dane is a puppy mill rescue, and we've had her for i guess 3 months now... she had never been outisde prior to the "rescue" so her pads are still REALLY sensitive... so she cant stay out for long... and the shepherd is a WIMP when it comes to cold....

The shepherd has had her obedience, and we do agility and fly ball in the summer... it's just winter time that she gets so bratty... Even though she's either at home with me, or at work with me, playing with 2-8 other dogs....but thats ok.. she's a rescue too and is only starting to come out of her shell now... she knows "enough" means "go lie down, stop trying to get attention and leave me alone... entertain yourself =P"... but i rarely shoot out that commande cause even if it's "bad" i love seeing her finally become a DOG! and i can deal with the brat part.
BTW we got these amazing tire toys at work, i gave her one yesterday and it's still intact!! i'm gonna get the name and the supplier info and post it on here =)

ROFL!  Those two are sure taking you for a ride!  :-D

Have you ever done any obedience training with them?  A lot of this "crazy" behavior can be dealt with if you regularly walk your dogs and reinforce their obedience skills.  That way they get mental and physical exercise.  A tired dog is a good dog.  If you wear them out during the day, they won't be sneaking wood snacks at night.  LOL!

i'll just add something quick to laugh at....

About 6 months ago, before we had the dane, we were fostering a rott and a basset hound. At the time i lived across the street from my boyfriends garage. the 3 buggers were tied outside and i ran across the street quickly to go ask my bf something. I came back to a property with NO dogs..... I freaked out, checked the ties, it looks like someone had cut the 3 of them...... i freaked out, thinking someone cut the leads and took my dogs... i ran up and down the street... asking neighbors if they had seen anything... one said that she say 3 dogs take off into the forest....

The Shepherd came back within 10 minutes (guess the thrill wore off and she started to worry) and her and i found the other 2 a couple of hours later... in the forest... buggers....

up until a few weeks ago i was CERTAIN that someone had cut those ties... until the dane and the shepherd were tied out here... and i was watching them from the window... and this is what happened

The shepherd tried to slip out of her collar, when she realized she couldnt... she grabbed the leash and pulled... she was able to cut through it in a second... the she leaped around like an idiot all over the dane... and does what she always does when ia dog is tied.. which is try to take it for a walk... well she grabbed the dane's tie and started pulling... within a second it snapped too... i sat there with my jaw open. Her teeth are like scissors... and I think thats why she's sooooooo destructive.....

lol!
thats why this is a problem. Its a dane and a shepherd. the dane isnt bad about it but when the shepherd (2 years) has nothing left to chew on she'll run around the house like a fool and then stop dead, put her mouth around the closest piece of furniture (or wall) and wait t'ill i react. She's the very spoiled brat in my pic.

the nylon bones... arg, they go through them in like a week, the COLLOSAL ones ;)

It's so frusterating! lol the black kongs are great... but unfortunatly they arent crazy about the "original" kongs and i dont think they make any fun shaped kongs in that material.

I work in a pet supply store and people will come and and try to return completly mangled toys because they "only lasted 3 weeks" i'm like "sold, i'll buy one of those tonight!"

The only toy that has tuffed is this stupid dollar store stuffed animal which i got for the shepherd when she was 6 months old. she ***** on it, its wiered. It's The only thing she doesnt destroy and if the dane goes near it..... WW3 breaks out.....

guess i'll stick to the wood for now... it's funny, some mornings i'll wake up, all groggy, go to turn on the coffee machine, make it 2 steps out of the bedroom and stub my toes on a piece of wood, thats when i know they've had one of their "crazy" nights and there will be pieces of wood ALL over the house, and the pile beside the woodstove will be non-existant. lol i love them but man.....

They lose them regularly, though.  Then its back to chewing on the couch.

$18 bucks for a year of chewing sounds like a bargain to me!

Let me repeat that the Nylabone has to be the GIANT one.  Not the triffling little chicken flavored ones.

The giant Nylabones cost in the neighborhood of $15-18.  Ouch.

Have you tried the black Kongs?  The ones labeld for Power Chewers?

I feel your pain.  We have one Dobie who can eat even those black Kongs without a lot of trouble.

Have you ever tried the BIG Nylabone products?  Yes, they can still chew them, but it takes a REALLY long time, and the pieces are inert and very tiny.  This is the only really durable product that I use:

http://www.nylabone.com/products/non-edible/big-chews/big-chews-for-big-dogs-dino-bone.htm

We have 2 that have been chewed on for over a year now, and still have 1/2 left.

The other product I use is sterilized bones. (not the beef femur).  It looks like this:

http://www.whitedogbone.com/2stfe.html

They last longer than the beef femur ones, which seem to be softer (and stinkier!)

Good grief!  Just how large of "large breed" dogs do you have?  LOL!  If your dogs can actually destroy a Kong, then I'm sure they'd blow right through a nylabone.  I hope some other members with giant breeds will weigh in here, because none of my dogs has ever been able to destroy a Kong.  I'm stumped.

I hear you about the wood pile too.  I don't know why, but every so often our dogs start to pilfer wood from the stack and go to town on it.  Like your dogs, they don't swallow the pieces - just spit them out - and I take the wood away as soon as I discover it.

When our dog Maggie was about 3 months old (she's the one in my picture here) she became fascinated with a steer pelvis our neighbor kept in his cactus garden.  The thing was bigger than she was at the time, and it was comical to see her struggle all the way home only to be defeated at getting it through the dog door.  I can't count the number of times we've had to return the pelvis to our neighbor.  Occasionally Maggie would hide it in the back yard and the neighor would call, "Did Maggie steal my pelvis again?"  LOL!
