rolled oats

Hi,

I don't think there's going to be a problem, but I thought I'd ask.

My dog (on a strict weight loss diet), has just eaten a bowl of dry rolled oats that I put out for my chickens. There was about 1 and a half cups of oats altogether. Am I right in thinking that besides getting a possible tummy upset, that she won't get sick?  I found her eating their corn and laying mash the other day, but she had only had a little bit.

She is soooo hard to keep on a diet when I have another dog, a cat and a couple of chickens to feed as well.  She will steal and eat anything. (except for the carrot I've been told to give her)

I think oats are ok for dogs. I used to give mine a 'working-dog' mix which contained rolled oats. If she's drinking plenty of water, then the oats will be ok, but not so nice inside her if she hasn't had a good drink.
I'm afraid most dogs will snaffle anything they can get their teeth into. Mine hoovers up around the bird-table. That's become her hobby.
I feel more sorry for the chickens!
How to stop her eating the chicken feed? There's only one sure-fire way. Put chicken-netting up around where they are and where you feed them, so it's a doggy no-go zone.
Cat food can be a bit too rich for dogs, and can result in diarrhoea, so maybe try to feed cat & dog separately, to make sure she doesn't snaffle that too.

Just some feedback.  She is fine.  No problems at all.  In fact I think the oats gave her a bit more energy.  I might put a bit in her food on a regular basis.

One small thing....when I gave my dog the 'working-dog' food mix, (which contained rolled oats, but also had other things in & meat protein) I was instructed to pour a small amount of boiling water over it & mix it in, then give it to her when it had cooled off a bit.
