what happened to my dog

i took my dog to the vet sunday for a rash on his head. he was started on prednisone and amoxicillin. on wednesday, we were all sitting outside and he was running around playing. his head was healing nicely. he ran about 30 feet, turned around and ran back to my son. he stopped and walked a couple of steps to get his ball which was under my son's foot. he turned and stumbled a couple of steps and hit his head on the cement. stood back up, walked a couple of steps, rolled onto the ground, tried to get back up, and just flopped down onto his belly with his head hyper-turned to the right side and died. he was only 4 years old and, other than the skin rash which the vet said was a common rash she has seen several times this year and it was almost healed, he appeared to be in perfect health. what could have happened to him?

So very sorry for your loss.  I hope that the pain will soon subside and you will be comforted.

First let me say how sorry I am for all of you.  The one saving grace of the situation is that your dog knew no pain or suffering.  Sadly, the pain and suffering is reserved for everyone he left behind.

Without a post-mortem exam, you will never really know what happened.  I rather doubt that the antibiotics had anything to do with it.  You mentioned that his head was hyper-extended to the right and that makes me think it was some colossal even in his brain.  Maybe a huge stroke.  Sometimes we have weak spots in major blood vessels from birth that show no symptoms until those weak spots finally rupture, and there is just no way of knowing they're there.  Of course, all this is a guess on my part.

His cause of death is really not important.  Never lose sight of the fact that he was secure and loved during his life - even if it seemed to short.  It sounds like he had a fabulous family in you all, and that's what he knew right up to the end.  I hope and pray that in time you can all share that same love and comfort with another deserving dog.  After all, what is life without the love of a good dog? :-)
