C3F8 or SF6

Hi. Iv had a IOL inserted last October which aimed to correct my vision following operations performed in the 1970s for congenital cataracts. Unfortunately surgery is ongoin. Debris stuck to the new lens and needed flushing out. Several wks later I developed scar tissue which needed zapping with a YAG laser but this caused retinal detachment. The tear was sealed with an ice probe. Full vitrectomy was completed and I had a C3F8 gas bubble inserted. 4 weeks in, my retina is coming away again and I have visible fluid in my vision as well as the remaining gas bubble. My surgeon wants to operate again and use the same procedure. Does anyone know anything about the different types of gas bubbles and the pros and cons please? I dont think I can stand another 8 weeks of gas in my eye. I have no sight in my other eye so as u can imagine, its a very difficult time. Thank you.

You would probably be better off letting the surgeon use the gas he/she prefers. SF6 has been around the longest.  If its possible to get a second opinion from another retina surgeon about your situation and if there is anything that might be done for the OTHER eye that would be helpful.

Also use the search feature and archives and read the many informative posts from people that have had gas bubble, retina surgery, vitrectomies, etc. They will help you and know others have made it through this very difficult problem

You can use the search feature and archives and read the many informative posts from people that have had retinal detachment surgery, repeat operations, gas put in the eye, vitrectomies, etc.

It's not likely that the choice of gas will make a difference. SF6 has been around for a long time. The only think I can suggest is to get a second opinion from a retina surgeon about BOTH your eyes and what might be done to help you.
