Cataracts in children

We discovered that my son had cataracts at the age of 3 years, almost 4, in both eyes.  We were never given a cause for the cataracts; noone could ever explain why he developed them nor how long he had them.  The doctor is sure that he was not born with them.  Now at the age of 7, he is struggling with focusing in school.  Could the two be related?
