I got into severe depression after my vision started worsening and I heard for the1st time about staphylomas etc while a dark spot was moving towards the center of my vision . I burst into tears before an OCT that would tell me about macular holes, neochoroid development etc. It is hard but eventually will learn how to live with that. Sounds impossible now but will . You will get the occasional ups & downs of course.Don't find it insulting from a doctor's point of you. Doctors are trained to not empathize with patients so he just offers what can be offered to support you emotionally since physically we have limited options unless they can give us gene therapy tomorrow
Do you have the problem in both eyes? If not you are lucky and "grateful"
A psychiatrist won't fix my eyes, I find that quite insulting
Head over to one of the psychiatric forums on "Depression"

But I'm aged 22 and serious sight threatening problems are developing already
"Then you need to see a psychiatrist as well" Correction of first sentence.
They you need to see a psychiatrist as well. You are over-reacting. Get your family and friends and support group involved in dealing with this. Your mental state is more troubling than the eye problem.

I've not got out of bed since the diagnosis
Use the search feature and archives to read about "myopic macular degeneration" It is not at all likely that you will go blind from this. the quality of your central vision could be threatened however VGEF inhibitors like lucentis and avastin work well for the "wet" form of MMD.
I would suggest seeking second opinion to discuss your fears and prognosis. ALSO ask about ICL and whether you are a good choice given your maculopathy.
