Finevision Trifocal IOL v Mplus

I am in the UK so have a wide choice of IOL's here and in Europe. I am 55 year old Male who repairs computers for a living and therefore need good  intermediate and near vision. The RLE will be purely because I want to rid myself of the vari-focal specs, I have no cataracts. After various comments here and on other forums I have been warned off the Mplus IOL due to no real intermediate focus the night halos are not a real issue as I rarely drive at night so would tolerate that side effect. There is now a Mplus X which addresses the intermediate focus point and the halo/glare issues. However, after a lot of research I am leaning to the PhysIOL Finevision Trifocal, a lens which I can find no negatives about. Has anyone on here any comments one way or the other after implantation of this lens?  Any comments gratefully received, especially concerning cocos for computer distance work of 40 to 90 cm.

Thanks.

Another option you might look into that I just discovered is the Symfony, which claims to have better intermediate vision than the AT lisa trifocal and better contrast sensitivity (for night driving) and decent near vision. It sounds like it may have fewer incidences of visual side effects. One concern is that it was just approved in June and so the studies on the net are early ones. I just posted something asking for comments on it a couple of days ago but unfortunately since it is new I'm doubtful I'll get any response. I'm in the US researching this online, perhaps those of you with eye docs in the UK where it is actually available might be want to get their impressions.

Is there some reason you were leaning towards the Finevision rather than the AT lisa tri?

I'm in Westbury (Wilts, UK) ... how did you get on in Bath and where did you go?
I'm considering RLE at present where Optical Express in Bristol are proposing the Lentis Mplus, however, I'm not happy that 15% of people need laser rework to some extent and that there are numerous reviews citing problems with glare/halos when driving at night.
I need to drive in the dark (35 miles) quite often and am getting cold feet.
Is the Finevision Trifocal really so much better than the Mplus?

hi Kaytm How is your vision now ?
Particularly as you have a monofocal lens in one eye and the tri focal in the other.
I have reasonable vision now +1.5 distance +3.5 Reading and an thinking about getting one eye lasered for distance  and an iol for reading/computer work
the finevision is recommended that both eyes have the lens to help with the neural learning

Will do. What you say is very true. These posts and diaries are not only reassuring, but useful in alerting people to when things are not normal.

Hi Katie

Your initial findings seem to mirror mina as diarised here
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Eye-Care/A-diary-of-a-Finevion-IOL-implant-/show/2079860

It will be really good to see your progress as well. I truly believe the more people who write of their experiences with all multifocal IOL's the better. It was very difficult to get 'real life' detailed results as against scientific laboratory benchmarking of successful implants. Perhaps running a brief diary of your own would be a good idea, copying the above post to start it.

Best wishes for your recovery and progress.

Hi

I am 35 years old and have just had my IOL surgery.

I am far-sighted, with astigmatism (original prescription between +7 and +8 in both eyes with marked astigmatism in both eyes).

I had LASIK surgery 13 years ago with reduced my prescription by half and allowed me to enjoy the benefit for a good while. However, my accommodation ability has deteriorated gradually over the past 13 years so I decided to go for IOL.

I had a toric monofocal lens put in the right eye (worst eye) as I have a corneal scar and residual astygmatism in that eye and the defects wouldn't allow for me to see well with a multifocal lens (as evidenced by multifocal contact lens trials!).

It is now 2 weeks post op and I am seeing well with the right eye - watching TV, reading number plates easily and night vision is excellent with no halos or glare (better than its ever been with glasses). The eye drops were very drying and even though it is day one of not having to do drops, my eye feels better already.

I have just had a FineVision Trifocal lens implanted in my left eye.5 days ago. Day 1 and 2 were "interesting" - my vision was just off 20:20 at my 24 hour post op check, but things were still very "weird" to look at with my left eye. I am now day 4 post op and things are getting better everyday. I am now managing to do computer work with the screen set to 110% zoom, can see the TV well and distance is good.

My eye is still very irritated and a bit scratchy, and I am seeing "targets" around lights - but it is still early days and I hope things will continue to improve.

Will keep you updated!

Meant to say in my post, the costs quoted art for both eyes, ie £4800 for the pair, as this lens does not work well if implanted only in one eye due to the neural adaption required.

Hi

Yes, it is Jonathon Luck . I had the full diagnostics tests with him last month, but his diary was full for December as he only does two surgeries per month at Circle.

The first will be 16th January 2014, and assuming all well, the second on the 23rd. My astigmatism at 1.25 in the right eye (0.5 in the left) is relatively slight and he will remove 0.6 to 0.7 of it with an ancillary nick manually. He has corrected this degree of astigmatism hundreds of times over the last 25 years and feels there is no need for the Femtosecond. This will leave a balanced 0.5 which is well in the scope of the lens. He too says the AT Lisa and Finevision are absolutely on a par, and far superior to the MPlus.

Vision express asked £3900 for the MPlus, the Finevision Trifocal will be £4800. I was looking at Gemini eye clinic in Zlin (Czech Rep)  where it would be £3600 for the Finevision using Femtosecond, but travelling there is a real pain from the West Country.

To say intermediate distance was the longest to achieve at only two months in, is wonderful. So I guess you are well happy with the outcome.

I hope to achieve, as we all do, spectacle freedom, and this lens type seems to offer the greatest opportunity to achieve that. I have looked hard and have yet to find a single negative thread about the AT Lisa or Finevision and their effects.

Keep us posted with your progress, and I will report at regular intervals the results of my implants.

I had RLE with the Zeiss ATLisa trifocal lens in October.  Went from -12.50 in both eyes with some astigmatism to 20/15!  Fantastic result!  No issues with reading, computer or distance.  The intermediate vision was the longest to achieve but it's now excellent.  The Finevision lens does not go to the strength I required but apparently the Finevision and the Zeiss are almost identical.

I had the RLE at Centre for Sight, East Grinstead as I wanted the operation to be done with laser (including my astigmatism).

Good luck in Bath (is it Jonathan Luck?)

I too am doing lots of research. I have an M+ fitted, but it has been a disaster. I find that when the pupil dilates, things get very blurred. As a result I only have one done. I am now leaning towards having it explanted.

BTW when I cover over the part of the eye with the extra magnification the blurring disappears. I can then still read! Online eye exams with the section covered over show 20/25 but deteriorates to 20/40 with the full eye.

I really dont want to go for monofocal - so am keen to hear more of the finevision.

I am in Northern Ireland. - virtually no backup from the commercial firm that fitted the lens.

In the US, we do not have any experiences with these IOLs.
