what causes floaters in both eyes?

A friend Complains of having floaters in both eyes. It started in the right eye with some dull pain around the eye 2 months ago. After visiting an eye specialist , he was told he has just floaters . The retina is intact and there is no posterior vitrous detachment. After two months, it has started in the left eye too. And the floaters in the right eye seem to be increasing.

What could be the cause of this, and how can the floaters be prevented from increasing.
