Some of the problems associated with laser treatment of holes: inability to seal hole with need for additional treatment, failure to prevent retinal detachment, dilated pupil, swelling (edema) of the macula. These are unusual and this is a relatively safe procedure.

If all they have to do is weld around the tear with a laser, you're very, very lucky.
After a detachment (followed by vitrectomy/scleral buckle/gas bubble, followed by another vitrectomy/ERM peel/IOL implantation) in my left eye, I had some holes and weak spots lasered in my right eye. It was uncomfortable, but no big deal. At all.
