Operation to remove a bone spur in the shoulder?

I had an MRI of my left shoulder last week.  Basically, I have problems making certain movements with my arm.  The radiologist (a physician, not a tech) said that there was a spur in the shoulder joint.  He felt is was something minor and that might need surgery "one day" but not immediately.  
Today, however, my orthopedist said it should be operated.  He said leaving the spur there could lead to it damaging the muscle over time.  I should note that he based his recommendation solely on the written diagnosis of the radiologist as I -- in my haste to get to the doctor's appointment -- totally forgot to take the MRI pictures with me.
Is there a serious danger of damage to the muscle by leaving the bone spur be for the time being?  Could anyone venture any general advise on the situation?
