Silicone Oil Used In Retinal Detachment Surgery

I had retinal detachment surgery some 7 weeks ago and silicone oil had to be used to assist in the healing process. The oil is due to be removed in 2 months time. My vision is extremely blurred in the eye, so much so I can't see the top letter (E) on the Snellen eye chart without the double vision. Is this normal to have such blurred vision with the oil in and how much will this improve when the oil is taken out. My consultant has said my vision will be blurred with the oil in, but also says I will a 50% chance it won't improve when the oil is taken out and a 50% i will be able to read a couple of lines more on the Snellen chart. There is also a chance I will totally lose the sight in that eye and also a re-detachment. He is very non committal, which I can understand as he doesn't want to give me false promises.  I know each case is different, depending on the tear etc, but some general advice would be appreciated

Your assessment and "odds" by your retina surgeon are the best indication of what improvement might be expected. Silicone oil is used in only the most severe and recurrent retina detachments and before the oil was available almost all of these eyes went completely blind.  I would suggest you use the search feature and archives and read the many helpful posts and discussions by people that have had this type of surgery and their concerns and frustrations, it will be very helpful to you and has been discussed often. Also remember to take special care of your other 'good' eye by regular examinations, avoiding eye injury and living a healthy livestyle (regular medical exams, no smoking, no excess alcohol, no cannabis, watch blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars, weight and exercise, wear proper eye protection)  JCH MD
