The white of my eye changed shape upon irritation - what is this?

First I would like to ask that you would bear with me on the description of my symptoms - I am really struggling with how to describe it.
This morning I felt as if I had an eyelash in my left eye. So like usual, I rolled my eye around, rinsed with drops, looked for whatever was causing the irritation, but couldn't find anything. It wasn't too annoying, so I just left it alone, and figured the object would work its way out of my eye.
Then after about 30 minutes I felt more irritation on the left side of my left eye. I pressed my lower lid against the area in an upward motion (gentley) hoping that whatever was floating around would move so I could see it. When I did that, the irritated area of the white part of my eye moved with my eyelid and became raised up - like it didn't have normal resistance. It felt very soft and plyable. I thought it was just an optical illusion - maybe the lighting caused my eye to look as if it were changing shape as I pressed on it - but then I let my eyelid down and looked at my eye and the white part stayed where I pressed it.  After blinking several times the "mushy" area went back to it's normal shape - but was still mushy. I then realized that the irritation I was feeling was not a hair in my eye - it was the mushy area moving around or changing shape that made me feel like something was there! The area seemed swolen or inflamed and mishapen.
This really freaked me out. I have had this same experience in the past, but always thought that my eye wasn't changing shape, it was just the way it looked due to the irritation. I never pushed on it or touched it, I just rinsed it out and left it alone - eventually the irritation would stop. This time however, I actually saw the effected area change shape and return to normal shape after blinking. This happened several hours ago, and right now it is still sore and slightly red - but I can not make it change shape again. It seems to have returned to its normal resistant state.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Thanks for your help!
