Why am I having random flashes like someone is turning on/off a lightswitch

For the last few weeks I have what seems like flashes in my vision. It’s like someone is turning on/off a light switch or it’s like lights flickering in the background. I saw an Optometrist and Opthalmogist. They both dilated my eyes to check my retina and everything is fine. The Opthalmologist is referring me to a retina specialist although she doesn’t think it’s necessary. Any idea what this could be?

Yes, it is a sign that needs to be checked by a retina specialist with special instruments to be sure you do not have a small tear in retina or hard to see retinal detachment.

Is this something I should go to the ER for or wait to the appointment with the retina specialist?
