I was diagnosed with severe dry eyes 4 years ago. I tried all kinds of liquid drops and they did not work. I tried Restasis for a few months and all it did was burn my eyes. They don't advertise this, but Restasis is only effective in 15% of the people. Finally I had my bottom tear ducts plugged.
What worked best for me was an ointment. I use Genteal PM as needed throughout the day, otherwies I'll get a headache from my dry eyes. The vision is cloudy when you 1st use it, but it dissipates as your body melts and spreads the petrolatum ointment. The ointment acts like your oily tears.
Recently I had cataract surgery and implanted a Crystalens IOL in my right eye. Because of this I stopped using the ointment in this eye for fear of an infection. But I did use the Nevanac (anti-inflammatory), Omnipred (prednisone steroid) and Vigamox (antibiotic). Much to my surprise, my Dr. says my dry eye is very mild.
Didn't you also have to use these drops post-cataract surgery? Did they help you? I would stop using the Restasis if after a month it's not helping.
Taking fish oil capsules and getting punctal plugs as suggested by Dr. Ray above helped me. I have both dry eyes and bleph. It seems to me that my dry eyes have also been helped by my bleph treatment. In addition to using Soothe eyedrops, which are preservative free, I wash my eyelids once or twice a day using the suds from an anti bacterial dial soap bar. This is a tip which I got previously got on medhelp. While it may seem as if it is difficult to do, it is not. Just use warm water, dial suds and rinse well. The dial bar soap is a lot cheaper to use than the eyelid cleansers sold in the pharmacy. If you decide to try it, I hope it works out for you. Best wishes.
You will have to discuss this with your ophthalmologist. Treatment for dry eyes include tears, Restasis, punctal plugs, omega 3, etc.
