endometrioma and IVF

Hi all!  Just a question- we are getting ready for IVF with ICSI (hopefully next month).  Today I had my sonohysterogram and they said my uterus looks great- no polyps or fibroids.  So that's the good news.  However - I saw the ultrasound tech type something saying "possible endometrioma on left ovary"  and I saw something about a hemmoraghic cyst.

Now I'm no stranger to endometriomas - had a lap back in May for a very large one on my rt ovary.  But this timing really stinks!!  When I asked the PA about it she said - we AREN'T looking at your ovaries today we will do that on day 3- which is probably Mon for me.  I am day 25 today. I really hope this "possible endometrioma" quiets down by then - is that possible?  If it is still there can I go ahead with IVF?  Or do I have to go on the pill/ lupron or something first??

MY RE said a while back when I asked him- a cyst is no big deal for IVF.

I don't know what to think??

About how long were you on BC/ lupron for?  I would love to supress my endo a little before this allstarts.  I have a lot of pain lately (mostly ovarian) even when it's not my AF time.

I'm pretty sure everyone who does IVF will have to start out on birth control and Lupron to suppress the ovaries whether you have a cyst or not. So I would be prepared to take Birth control for a few wks before the IVF process starts. Thats just standard protocal. Remember the whole IVF process takes over a month and a half with all the meds you will be using.

Thanks! : )  nope we are about to do another IUI.. we were just about to move onto IVF when during our IVF consult i was on cd2 and the dr wanted to take advantage of that month (even though my dh's urologist said we really needed IVF with ICSI) so he decided to see how my body reacted to injectables and try one last IUI while the IVF paperwork went through, thats when we got preg the first time.. then again thru IUI, right before we were going to move onto IVF... ha! I guess i should say its our last IUI cycle everytime!   so since it works (it just needs to stick!!) we are back to IUI after our break after our last miscarriage!
Yea its hard to say about the large endometrioma surgery to remove that. my left ovary was already not functioning before the surgery, but of course that didnt' help it function any better i'm sure.. I've thought about what i'll do if one develops on the right, and i think i'd leave it alone until it got too big that it would interfere, for fear that i'd loose my last working ovary from the surgery or something! ugh endo sure is a pain!!!
Well here's to SUPER STICKY BFP's  and 2009 babies! : )   (seems like yesterday i was sad that i wouldn't have a 2007 baby, now im sad we won't be having a 2008 baby!, hopefully 2009 will be the year for us both!: )

Thanks!!!  I read some research that said endometriomas had no effect in test groups as far as IVF success.  Also they said actually a lap to remove an endometrioma may have more effect of IVF success- due to ovarian damage and scar tissue.  The research also said draining the cyst at the time of ooctyte retrieval could be a good idea.  Who knows?  Guess I'll just have to wait and see what my RE says.  I HATE ENDO!!!!

Good luck with starting your drugs!!!!!  Are you about to begin an IVF cycle?  Hope we get our BFPs in '09:-)

Hello! ugh, sorry to hear about that, endo is such a pain and race against the clock always!!I also have had a large endometrioma and most of my left ovary removed due to it.. and there are months that they think they see another one on that left side (thats about all that side is good for, is producing cysts!)  When we were about to do IVF and they thought i had a hemorrhagic cyst vs endometrioma they said that as long as its (i hope i remember this right) under 3cm or so it shouldn't interfere with IVF.. otherwise when it gets bigger than that it can start decreasing your chances "they think" unfortuantely just not enough research is done with endo it seems! You might want to google the size, but i want to say they were saying around 3cm we would do a lap smaller, then it shoudlnt' matter..  But my questionable endometrioma must have been a hemmorhagic cyst since it went away, so GOOD LUCK!!!! keep us updated!
