Anyone on metformin???

My Dr. just suggested I try metformin to try to make my cycles more regular. I took one on Friday and haven't taken one since because it upset my stomach so bad! Has anyone else had side effects with it and does anyone have any success stories because of it?

Aww! Thanks again girls! I talked to my Dr.'s nurse today and she suggested a half a tab. for a week or so and then go for a whole one...then eventually two a day...I haven't decided if it's worth it or not. I've tried clomid and that didn't work so I'm kind of negative on this whole meds thing. If I do try it again I will take it after eating instead of immediately before the meal. It's so great to hear other women's experiences with it. Thanks! And I hope for a BFP for us all very soon!

I was on it (supposed to still be on it). I have been on it off and on for a few months. I have PCOS so that is why I take it. I could never stay on it. I can't even bear a week on it anymore. Some people have great success with it. It does help me ovulate, but the side effects aren't worth it to me. Even after I told my RE how horrible it was she said (well, the nurse did) to keep taking it. I just couldn't. I tried the fortamet (extended release) and got even sicker on that. The only think I can tell you is to take it AFTER a meal (about 10 mins). Empty stomach or barely ate anything? Don't even bother - it will tear you up! I hope it doesn't do this to you but I believe in telling the whole truth and nothing but it. The first few days you will probably feel sick, take it at night on a friday and that whole weekend. That way you can be home and around the potty if it doesn't agree with you. Hope this helps! Good luck sweetie!

Yup metformin is a culprit for upset stomach and diarrhea.  Unfortunately I have to take it even with pregnancy.  YOur body will get used to it though.  It will be a great sacrifice but it's all worth it in the end. good luck to you :0)

I also was on metformin and the upset stomach was terrible!  Make sure that you are starting at a low dose and working your way up.  For example, my goal was 1500mg, so i was on 500mg for two weeks, then bumped up to 1000 for a week, and then finally 1500mg.  You also have to really watch your diet while on it.  Eating good carbs will help control the queasy stomach. (basically if you eat a carb you have to make sure to match it with a protein)  I suggest the book "Insulin resistance diet" My ob gave it to me and it helped explain what i needed to do.  Give it some time and hopefully your body will get used to it.

I am also on Metformin.  It does take time for your body to adjust to the medication.  A good thing to do is to take it with a meal.  AFter you eat take it.  This helped me out a lot.  I still have some diarrhea but it isn't that bad.  I take two pills in the morning and two pills at night.   Good luck!!

I had serious diarrhea but eventually your body adjusts and MOST women start to tolerate it after a while.  I've had much more success with an extended release brand name version called Glumetza.  First of all, when I was on the regular stuff, I was supposed to take it three times a day, and I NEVER remembered.  This is extended release, so I take it at night - four pills.  It is very expensive though.  I have insurance and I still pay almost $60/mo for it!  But even though I'm broke, that's how much I love the difference.  It hardly affects my badly at all.  I tried switching to the generic extended release, and was warned that people don't "tolerate" it as well.  Well, let's just say I gave up after a month, because the pills were all coming out in the toilet first thing in the morning - hardly any different than when they went in (sorry if TMI).  It took about a month before I figured it out.  I would spend much of every single morning on the toilet, and it was NOT pleasant.  As a result, I had success w/the Glumetza regulating my cycles (the other 3x/day stuff not as much, because I never remembered to take it) - but when I tried to switch to the generic, I had a 53 day cycle because my body wasn't getting it's medicine - it was going straight to the toilet.  So I reluctantly went from paying $1.23/mo for the generic extended release metformin back to over $60/mo for the Glumetza.  That's just my experience - but everyone is different!  Best of luck to you!
