Fertility at 45

This is my first post, I have no one to talk to. I have never met anyone I wanted to have a child with until now...I am 45 and my husband is 35. I went to a fertility doctor last week for advice. She said I was in good health and that the only issue was my age. I am still set to go for further testing to determine if I can use my own eggs for IVF, otherwise only option is donor embryos. I can' t believe it costs $23,000. I have become very depressed and wake up in the mornings with a feeling of impending doom. Just looking for some kind words and encouragement.

Thank you Andie,

(I'm sure as in the case of everyone here) I really want to conceive naturally. I was very surprised that the fertility specialist went straight to donor eggs as I have several other tests on deck (ovarian reserve panel, prenatal panel and vitamin D, PCOS panel, genetic screening, MRI of pelvis). I have already had the "dye" test and tubes are fine with slight dilation of the left. She said she wouldn't do IVF with my own eggs unless I had X amount etc (I was kind of glazed over at this point so not sure of exact numbers). And donor eggs (which in itself is scary) for $23,000.00 and no guarantee is extra scary. I want to walk before I run!  Thanks again for responding. Having someone to talk to means a lot to me and I am feeling a lot more positive today.

Thank you so much!

I don't know why but in my heart I just don't feel like it's the "end of the road" for natural. I am going to try and relax, pray a lot and let nature take it's course. I am feeling better today and have a more positive outlook thanks to you and the others here.

I really hope you will be able to conceuve without help. I would adivse against IVF because they either freeze or throw away the biggest part of the embryos...and those are kids too. No matter what the doctors say...I still think throwing away 3-5-7 embryos for one that "stays" is not ok. Please be well documented before you take any decision. I wish you the best.

I agree with Tasha my mom had my little sister at 45..And she had her naturally...But get your other options before you rule out you just can't. Don't be depressed you may didn't have anybody to talk to but you do now...Baby dust and good luck.

Yes, an assessment was done. She still gets periods as well and her doctor told her to be careful bcuz it was possible she could still get pregnant.

How did she find out that she still has fertile eggs at 63?  I can see learning you still have eggs, if you are still having periods, but fertile ones?  Did the doctor do some kind of fertility assessment of her eggs?

My boyfriends mom had him at 39 and his brother at 43. She also recently found out she STILL has fertile eggs at 63 years old !!! There's plenty of hope out there.

Tasha,

Your story gives me hope after listening to the fertility specialist's heart crushing matter of fact statistics. We are going to keep trying until I can get the long lists of tests she requested taken care of. Hopefully a miracle will happen!

Thank you for your kind words.

Before you go that route talk  to ur doc about you wanting to try natural. My mom was 42 when she had my little sister and she only had one tube, so don't get discouraged yet, crazier things have happened
