i need you. i am devistated.

my world came tumbling down today. my doctor called me and told me that although my blood test for the down syndrome came back negative, the ultrasound showed that my baby at 17weeks have shorter arms and legs and so i have a higher chance of down sundrome and i have to go in on monday for a Amniocentesis . i am broken, in tears and down on life. i cant stop crying.  i dont know what to do.i am thinking so much. they also said the baby is a bit short too.
1. the Amniocentesis can also cause birth defects or miscarriage
2. if they say that my baby has no down syndrome, then why are the arms and legs shorter.
i have a daughter that is waiting anctiously for this baby. i need support, help, and advice. i am broken in a million pieces. its 1:30am and i am sitting here crying myself to death.

I also think everything will be fine.  My friend is 35 weeks and when they did her sono they told her they couldn't find the baby's stomach.  They also found out that her baby has a hole in his heart.  They scared the **** out of her!  Come to find out the baby has a stomach.  She had to have an amnio b/c they told her his heart condition can be related to Down Syndrome.  They did the amnio and he's fine.  The scared her too....It just seems like they give you the worst case scenerio just b/c they want to cover themselves.  I know it's hard but just try to stay positive....I wish you the best and I will keep you in my prayers!

I had an amnio with my first. It didn't cause any problems with her and we found out everything was ok! Don't worry - do what you think is best and remember that the other test came back fine! Good luck - my prayers are with you!

I'm a very sorry you are having to go through this.  I am also surprised they are checking you for ds at such a young age.  I have heard countless times how these tests have been wrong.  Some drs. won't even do them because of the high rates of inaccuracy.  Your b/w says negative and I would hold onto that.

I wouldn't worry unless you have to. IMO, drs thow every slight possiblity for problems out there on the table just to cover their a$$es. There are so many posters here who have been given horrifying possibilites to have the next tests come back normal. Did they say how much shorter?? It may be nothing at all.

For most women an amnio is quick, painless and safe. The question is, IF they did find something, would you discontinue the pg? Of course now that they have the Fear of God in you, you want to know everything is ok.

My money is on everything is fine and it's just another cya for the md's. It happens all of the time now so they have documentation if ever a lawsuit arises. It's all about money to them.
