Beta Nightmare!

A year ago I went to see an infertility doctor due to being unable to get pregnant.  At that time I was 30 and trying to conceive for the first time.  After a series of blood draws testing showed my estradiol levels never got higher then 18.  I was placed on Clomid and got pregnant the first month with medications.  We lost our baby at 12 1/2 weeks due to a cystic hygroma and hydrops and I had a D&C in mid-November.  By Mid-February I still had not had a period and my doctor checked my beta which showed to be 98.  After scans and a series of weekly beta checks (93-88-67-63) I had a second D&C for retained product on March 5.  My beta that day was 56.  A week after I got my beta checked again and it had dropped to 13 but when I had my beta checked this week it was back up to 16.  My doctor had me take a urine pregnancy test and it was positive.  He is unsure of why my betas seem to stay stagnant.  How on earth can my urine pregnancy test and beta test still be positive 4 months after my first D&C?  What is the cause of this?  We am so super frustrated at this point and we are so eager to start trying again.

Hi,
How are you? I'm sorry to hear what you have been through for the last year. A high level of hCG can also mean a number of things and should be monitored  to rule out molar or multiple pregnancy and other gynecological issues. After pregnancy loss, most women can expect their levels to return to a non-pregnant range about 4 – 6 weeks after and regular testing until  they return back to normal. Also, medications that contain the hormone used for fertility treatment may interfere and have effect on the hormone levels. It is best that you check with your attending physician for proper evaluation. Additional diagnostic tests may need to be done also. Take care and stay positive always. Do keep us posted and best regards.
