Anti-nausea meds that don't put you to sleep?

I finally asked for some anti-nausea pills because I can't take this daily nausea.  I've taken some before (not sure which kind) and did fine, but these I have now (promethazine) make me go to sleep.  I literally can't keep my eyes open, I surely can't drive (I took one at work!).

What are my options for anti-nausea pills?  I don't want to call the doctor and just keep trying scripts.  What's worked for others?

Also, why would they only call in 12 pills?  It's not like this is a narcotic and it's not like anyone is doing anything to make my nausea go away (or cramping, or fatigue or other pains!).

Thanks,

i've been diagnosed with Gastroporesis and the meds they have me on are not working. Not only are they not working but i just had an adverse reaction , my face and eyes were spasming like crazy and i felt like my jaw was breaking, plus my speach was impaired. The medication was Reglan and i need a little advice on what other medications are out there and hopefully it won't make me react the same way and will not make me so tired. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks to you both.

Liz, I've had lower left sided abdominal pain for years.  I am 38 yrs old.  First thought and treated like Crohn's then told it was not Crohn's.  Found my gallbladder not functioning (no stones) so it was removed in Nov 07 and now I have upper left ab pain, way more nausea than before, fatigue and severe cramping every other week or so.  They can't seem to find what's wrong, although I don't feel they are trying very hard.

The nausea is daily and a lot of times worse than the cramping I get on occasion (which is comparable to labor pains).  I just need relief.

I've had anti nausea meds before while taking narcotics but they did not make me sleepy.  After GB surgery they had patches on me and gave injections, etc because I was prone to nausea.  Not sure if I was sleepy because I was also on morphine!

I make my own ginger tea, I think that does help some but it can be constant for days, only lessening some.  I was hoping a script would do the trick!

Thanks for your advice.  I will call asking for either meds.

Just remembered - when I was on FEC chemo, I was also given another anti-emetic, granisetron, by the Oncology nurse, to take for the 3 days after chemo.

I was prescribed domperidone for nausea when having FEC chemotherapy for breast cancer and am currently taking it for a Crohn's flare as the Crohn's has spread from the colon, and small intestine to the oesophagus, giving me severe nausea. My prescription is for one or two, 10 mg tablets, up to 4 times a day. It is not a narcotic and doesn't make me feel sleepy. I don't know how much it costs as I live in England, and when over 60 yrs of age, women get free drugs. Men only get free drugs when 65 yrs, which isn't fair is it?  Domperidone may have a different name in the US, as a lot of our drugs have different names. I also find ginger really helps too - I drink litres of non-alcoholic ginger ale and alcoholic ginger beer - very occasionally for a treat, about an inch of Green Ginger Wine,(same alcoholic content as normal wine) topped up with ginger ale and ice.
Ginger biscuits too, are good.

What is the underlying cause of your nausea? Do you have Crohn's? Perhaps once the underlying cause is diagnosed, then appropriate medications will stop the nausea for good.
Take care,
Liz.

Zofran is a good antiemetic, which does not cause drowsiness.  IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE.
