I have taken quite a bit of different antibiotics back in May. I have stopped taking it a about 3 weeks ago, maybe longer and noticed that I have a hard time gaining weight now. I have had bad anxiety and depression as well recently which may have caused my appetite to go down drastically but when it comes back I start to eat a lot and it doesn't seem like I can gain weight like I used too. Does anyone know if antibiotics can do this because maybe it killed all the good bacteria in my stomach and now I am no longer absorbing good nutrients from what I eat?
If this is so, will the good bacteria grow back eventually? I know I can take probiotics and eat certain things like yogurt or kefir but I want to know if the good bacteria will grow back on its own.
Also, just out of curiosity, if I do take probiotics or eat things like yogurt, theoretically, wouldn't I have to only eat these things once? As bacteria will continue to grow from there almost like planting a seed and watching it grow? Once I have it in my system why would I have to keep taking probiotic pills or eating yogurt? Its bacteria so shouldn't it just grow from there? Can anyone explain that to me?
Antibiotics are unlikely to be related to the inability to gain weight, while it is likely for the stress and loss of appetite to be responsible along with other issues such as hormonal/ endocrine imbalance etc. I would suggest taking a good balanced diet with adequate carbohydrates, proteins, fats and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Probiotics may also be helpful. If your still have issues gaining weight despite adequate healthy diet, you may consider an evaluation by a primary care physician to rule out secondary issues and for appropriate management.
Hope this is helpful.
Take care!
