How serious is PORTAL HYPERTENSION

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy today.  I thought I was going to get good news or at least hoped for it.  Well the colonoscopy revealed some small valleys in the colon (diverticulosis) hemmeroids, IBS, etc etc.  NOW when he did the esophogus that was a different story all together.  He noticed bulging veins in my esophogus!!!!!  I am sooooooooo frightened.  He said he took a biopsy of the tissue to look for inflammation..............AND I am scheduled for a liver ultrasound in 2 weeks to see if I have ab;ocgage causing the veins I think he said "portal hypertension.!!! OMG and I going to die!!!!! .very frightened
Please help

Thanks CalGal I truly appreciate your response.  Actually my friend said that the Doc wanted to Rule Out  Portal Hypertension.I have never had liver problems and all my lab work regarding AST ALT AP are all within normal limits... I just had lab work completed on 3-18-11.  Also 4 years ago I had a Cat Scan with Contrast because I had an Hemagioma.  At that time I had no lesions or anything.

My skin eyes and urine are all normal.  What should I be thinking of

Portal hypertension is not a death sentence. It's a diagnosis - and you don't really have even that yet. You said 'think he said portal hypertension', so you don't really have a true idea of what's going on. In most cases the effects of portal hypertension can be managed through diet, lifestyle changes, medications, endoscopic therapy, surgery, or radiology.

The first posting looked as though it didnt take thats why I reposted.

Thanks for responding.  Not at all worried about the IBS, Hemerroids, or Hietal Hernia.

I AM frantic regarding  the bulging vein in my esophagus, the biopsy, and the chance of the problem being portal hypertension, secondary to cirrosis of the liver.

I have already spoken to the Dr. thats why I have turned to this forum to hear from others that may be able to lend some comforting words and who have experience with the same type of problem.

Thanks for the welcome

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  Please do not make multiple postings in a short time frame on the same subject as it causes confusion.  You need to stop worrring so much before all the information is in.  You are not going to die.  I would recommend talking to your doctor about your concerns.  Also a colonoscopy will not show IBS, this is a diagnosis based on symptoms.
