I forgot to mention in my last post just above that I had 2 stomach polyps (benign) removed. I had called the pathologist myself to ask her a couple questions, one regarding the polyps. She said that it can happen and she herself had been on PPI's for some time and had them.
This past year I lost up to 10.2% of my bone mass leaving me to have osteoporosis. I have been on PPI's for 20+yrs with no vacations from it. Not 1 doctor told me that it inhibits the obsorbsion of calcium!! When I found out that I had osteoporosis this year, I asked my gastrointerologist about this and told him I read it on the web. He told me that indeed it does prevent the calcium from being obsorbed. %??%%!!! How come NO doctor EVER told me that???? I'm SO ANGRY!
I think the confusion about all of the PPIs, including nexium, is that most docs prescribe PPIs without a lot of testing and without that testing it's possible that if someone feels better taking the nexium and stays on it longterm without any testing being done, it could end up masking a more serious problem - like stomach cancer.
To my knowledge taking any of the PPIs can result in bone/calcium issues, B12 issues, possibly the development of stomach polyps (benign) and changes in gallbladder function, but I do not believe the PPIs can directly cause cancer.
