Oh to be validated! I had three gall bladder attacks over a few months in 2008. Went to three different places for each attack, and each time the ultra sound showed no issues with the gall bladder. After the 3rd one, I got on the internet and found out about the HIDA scan, and demanded one. The results? I had a non-functioning gall bladder. Recommendation was to remove it. Ok, did that in November 2008 via the usual scope procedure. I was back at the surgeon's office within days with the upper right quadrant pain (right side, under the rib). Aside from trying to sell me on yet another procedure during the visit, he said it was impossible to be related to the surgery, and was most likely my liver. Period. He washed his hands of me. I was in and out of Emergency rooms, cat scans, you name it, even in the ER on Christmas Eve. More tests, even a liver biopsy. In so much pain I drove myself to an ER in Feb of 2009 and ended up admitted to the hospital for 6 days. They finally gave up and sent me to a pain management clinic. They did two CT-guided celiac pain blocks, each one only helping about 2 days. The third one they added alcohol to the mix, to deaden nerves (something they said they used in cancer patients). Oh, that got rid of my pain alright...Within 2 hours of the procedure I started with diarrhea so bad (up to 30 times a day) that I was hospitalized for 13 days, lost 20 pounds, and they admitted they could not control it. Something was mentioned that the alcohol must have stimulated the Vargus/Vegas? nerve and that caused what I now have as Dumping Syndrome. Could not eat, or even smell food, or sometimes just sip water, and have to right THEN run to the bathroom. I never wanted to eat anymore. My bowels just could not be controlled, and I was even put on an old school medication of Opium 10% tincture (6 drops) to try and slow down things. We also tried extremely expensive Sandostatin injections 3 times a day. Finally even Johns Hopkins gave up on me. My bowels began to slow down some last year, and I have moved overseas, and they have gotten a bit more better. BUT I just started with that very familiar upper right quadrant pain again. Guess the alcohol wore off? I am sick to think my family and I have to deal with this all over again. The overseas doctors so far are not helping, they say it is adhesions, even though I said the pain started right after the scope. And they seem not to respect or take the medical records I have provided from the American doctors. Thank you for listening, I am NOT giving up, but it is a nightmare to have it come back.
Makosa2, are you following a low fat diet? Are you stools normal? No color change or diarrhea? In some cases, certain types of narcotic pain meds can raise the pressure in the common bile duct and that can cause an enormous amount of pain. To get some help, you're probably going to have to call the doc and go back to see him - however unappealing that prospect is. You might want to ask if you could change the type of pain med you're taking or trying something like a smooth muscle 'relaxer' like bentyl or Elavil.
