On Feb. 1, 2011 I had a routine vein procedure on my R. leg and after being sent home (same day) I began to have a lot of pain all over my body, felt like I had pneumonia and drove myself to my local small hospital. After several days there I was referred back to the surgeon that did the original vein procedure and my living nightmare began. When I got back to the "bigger hospital" they discovered that I had a very bad staph infection and thus began the battle to save my life. There are days and weeks that I have no recollection of at all. Excruciating pain and weakness took over my life. I am NOT SURE of the time table, but right in the beginning of this illness and fight to save my life, they decided that I NEEDED my gall bladder removed. I vaguely remember arguing that I had NEVER had a gall bladder attack, WHY was the surgery necessary, etc. and was told that it "looked" like I had a blockage in the bile duct and the surgery was necessary. Off to surgery I went late one night and thus began my REAL nightmare. I couldn't eat, vomited bile constantly, lost 50 pounds in 5 weeks (while in the hospital,) was in and out of consciousness from reactions to antibiotics, horrible allergies to some, just bad reactions to others. At one point I took a fall in my hospital room (which I don't remember at all) and had a huge hematoma on the back of my head. I have continued to have nausea and vomiting until recently. I have lost an additional 20 pounds since mid Match, when I was dismissed from the hospital. My nausea has been helped by Phenergrin compound placed on my wrist throughout the day and evening. I have continued to have pain (supposedly from the pneumonia I developed in the hospital) in the R. lung area and then it went into crackles after I came home as the lung "healed" and on inspiration of a breath I STILL have terrible pain and my physician says it is just pleuracy now. When I inhale the pain is sometimes unbearable, my upper R. quadrant feels like I have "a round ball" inside of it IF I even try to lay on the R. side to rest or sleep. Even leaning against the arm of the couch with my upper body causes extreme discomfort. I have FINALLY given in and will let my physicial "scope" me to see what is going on in my stomach, because although the severe vomiting of bile is over, I still have terrible bouts of nausea and can eat very little without being nauseous. My PA asked me the other day IF I had fallen on my R. side when I fell in the hospital room and I told him I don't even remember falling. He wondered IF I might have cracked a rib and perhaps that is responsible for all the pain in my URQ and my problems taking "a breath" without a huge hitch hitting me as I take in the breath. Does anyone have any suggestions? I AM eating OK now, just not full meals, which I realize WON'T hurt me, but I have continued to lose weight, no matter how much I eat. I still have extreme bouts of nausea, have to "fight" to not vomit all the time, although that part is fading - the pain still persists in my URQ. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. To be quite frank, I feel that my life was totally ruined when they did this "emergency" gall bladder surgery (lap) and although I needed to loose weight, losing so rapidly has caused this 65 year old body to become saggy, wrinkled and I lost extreme muscle mass which has left me very, very week, even unable to make it up stairs, walk any long distance or have any endurance at all... HELP!!!
