Pain in mid-abdomen, then in right abdomen

My relative (82 years old man), had a fever of 39 deg C one night and pain in lower right abdomen, and ultrasound showed his intestines at this part to be swollen and infected (the doc suspected appendicitis, but it was not), and he is currently on antibiotics and panadol right now. He told me that he had pain in his mid-abdomen when young too, not continuing, but on and off. And that he is very tired in the time period around his stroke until now. (start 2008) What could be the problem? Thank you so much!!
