Hard time pinning down a diagnosis.

I'm worried about my husband, 64 yrs. old.  He suffers from intense bouts of constant diarrhea, for 2 days, painful and bleeding. Then he stops eating, the diarr. goes away, he's o.k. for 2 weeks and then it recurs.  He got a colonoscopy.  The results were normal.  He asked the dr. if hemmerroids are causing the bouts of diarr. and the dr. said , 'no.'  So what else could it be?  By a fluke I read in a newspaper an ad asking, "Go ulcerative proctitis?" Could this be it?  He gets urges to move his bowels, passes blood, and I'm nagging the poor guy to get his hemerroids removed so the drs. can figure out what's wrong. It's so fustrating.

Find a good gastroenterologist and get a second opinion.  They can diagnose his problem with the hemorrhoids, and these do not cause diarrhea, but will cause bright red bleeding.  There are many things that can be causing your husband to have the problems he is having, but only a gastroenterologist can diagnose him as this is their specialty.  Take care..

Hi Babes,
Does your Husband suffer with bouts of anxiety, no doubt hes anxious about whats happening to him, but i mean, normally is he troubled or anxious, because it could be IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can come and go. It sounds like he could really need to have his hemorrhoids sorted out. Aw babes he really must be suffering, and you must be also, being so worried about him. Ask the Doctor about IBS.

It does sound like colitis but I doubt that it is.  If his colonoscopy came back normal, it's not colitis, as a colonoscopy would show colitis.  Did they take any tissue for biopsy?  Has your husband seen a GI specialist at all?
