bowel in hernia

HI, I had a ct and MRI and it showed the bowel is in the hernia. I have had diarrhea after meals at different times and question if this is the cause of the diarrhea. I have no pain and no vomiting and appetite very good. ALso would surgery stop this diarrhea.

Shadow,
Glad they're going to fix it.  My husband has a tiny scar from his repaired hernia.  My gastro didn't think I needed to have mine fixed, which I wish it had been fixed, because it looks so strange next to my belly button.  Try that Activia yogurt at the grocery store, or any Acidophilus milk or product, it helps breaks down waste, so it won't get stuck.  Also, 100 percent wheat toast or cheerios bulks up the digestion in a real gentle way, to make food pass easier, too.  Just some natural ideas until you get your operation.  KY jelly helps any soreness that may develop for you, too.
Best wishes.  GG

Not sure if I can answer your questions, but I can tell you about my similar situation, to help you maybe understand.  I have an umbilical hernia, which is where the muscles tore loose in the middle of my tummy and the bowel pushed out in that opening a little bit.  It just made a lump where my belly button is, very unattractive, but the pain went away after the muscles healed up, and I have no digestive problems from that hernia, even tho the bulge is still there.

I have heard of a large loop of the bowel getting stuck in a similar type hole in the large diaphram muscles, higher up than the tummy, and in a hole larger than a hernia, which is very unusual, but digestion got stuck in the choked-off intestine there and they had to operate on that person.  I think that hole came from a car wreck.  Anyhow, if your scans showed a large portion of the bowel coming thru your hernia, then I suppose it could cause some sort of backup and resulting diahrrea when the waste finally makes it thru.

My hernia was caused when I was bloated up from IBS, the bloating stretched my belly to the limit, and I was coughing one day while laying down and the force tore the muscles and made the hernia.  When I had that IBS, I had diarrhea 24/7.  Some people never find out why they have IBS, but mine was caused by a medication I was taking that disagreed with my digestion.  As soon as I got off that drug, the swelling and diarrhea went away, altho I still have sensitive digestion.  I also ate probiotics for a while in the middle of all that, to restore good bacteria to break down waste, so I'm sure that helped, too.

So, that is what happened to me, perhaps it will help you at least understand what might be going on, but you really need to address your diarrhea problems to your physician, and also ask him to educate you more on your hernia and any effect it may have on your bowel functions.
