just got final results from hospital ct scan

hey everyone. i just got back home with my final results of my CT of abdomen and pelvis scan that I had done on Friday. I put the preliminary results on here earlier but the final ones from today go more in depth. ok here goes..
both kidneys demonstrate normal size, attenuation and morphology. No stones are identified within the collecting systems, ureters, or the urinary bladder. the urinary bladder and prostate gland are within normal limits. a small left inguinal hernia contains fat only. the apprendix is well visualized and normal. Pancolonic diverticulosis is without evidence of diverticulitis. A small sliding hiatal hernia is noted. No free air or fluid in the abdomen or pelvis. the remaining visualized solid and hollow abdominal viscera are unremarkable. the osseuos structures are unremarkable. the lung bases are clear.
As I stated earlier my symptoms were pain the lower left abdomen, right below the beltline. I have been doing much better yesterday and today. I just ate supper , my first real meal today and things have been fine, only thing isI had a full filling right below the beltline immediately upon eating. so this tells me my problem must lie within my stomach and not below that. It hasn't been painful, just a full feeling that is now subsiding.. the full feeling could be coming from the fact that I hadn't eat much all day..
Anyway, more of you help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I haven't had anymore sharp cramps or anything like that. Funny thing about all of this is that my symptoms are virtually non existent upon standing up or lying down.
anyway, if any of you have any good ideas,at what this might be, please let me know. I am not really worrying about cancer anymore, because of my ct scans, and both of them came back good. I think I might just need to lose some weight and eat healthier. again, thanks for any more help you can give!

STRESS has a LOT to do with Divertic ....  IT is very common, a LOT of people live with it and have no flare ups.  I am 58 and I just had my 3rd colonoscopy yesterday. I have had divertic for years now and I KNOW when I am ready to make a big decision or take an important trip, it WILL flare up. I have no fears about cancer, it's just pockets in my colon ... from YEARS of abuse I am sure! I never watched my diet and drinking.  Yes, I enjoy a glass of wine or a rum and coke when i want to now, but i try not to over do, especially in times of stress.  The colon prep is MUCH better than it was in past years... there is nothing to the test itself ... so just let go of the fear and get it done... you WILL FEEL MUCH better afterwards!

Tnman, having diverticulosis does not predispose you to cancer. As for whether the 'pan' form should mean you see a doc sooner? You're back to the same thing - what are they going to offer you? There are no meds at the current form to treat diverticulosis whether that's just one pocket or a thousand pockets.

It's possible the radiologist could have mistaken the diverticulitis, but it's kind of hard to miss - you see 'outpouchings' where ever there are pockets. So yes, I suppose it's possible, but? And if he's seeing pan anything - and you keep going back to cancer so I'll use that as an example - I suspect if there were THAT much cancer in the large bowel that we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. You would be long gone by now. I don't mean that to sound sarcastic, but I believe that no one could get to that state/stage of having cancer without having one heck of a lot of symptoms - a lot more than you probably had.

And before you decide to do the colonoscopy, talk to the doc. Many docs don't feel that when a person has diverticulosis - after the initial diagnosis - that it's worth doing a colonoscopy. The whole process is a bit harsh, so the thought is 'why add more pressures to a bowel that is already a bit compromised unless it's absolutely necessary. So that would lead back to the initial question - just how 'pan' is the 'pan' diagnosis.

yeah, but mine is pan colonic.. isn't that like a lot worse and more risky? do i even need to be worrying about cancer? if it was only one little place, i would prob be ok with that. but mine is widespread. doesn't this warrant a quicker approach than next week and then having to wait a few more days for a colonoscopy? will this turn into cancer or what if it s cancer instead of diverticulosis could the radiologist have mistaken this for diverticulosis and it really be cancer, what if i have both going on?

This is nothing like cancer. You're making a wild jump from what has been found to something that is a very low probability. Look up diverticulosis online and do some reading. You'll see what the condition consists of and what the normal treatment is.

You're not going to help yourself by being panicky.

Millions of people have diverticulosis and live with the condition and do just fine. You'll probably be one of them if you take care of yourself. Doc's aren't jumping up and down to do anything, because there's little to do. You have pockets and they're telling you to change your diet, so do so. Focus on that. There are no meds they can give you for diverticulosis. The docs are taking you seriously, but what would you have them do when there's nothing medication-wise that can be done? It's up to you right now to make sure that the diverticulosis doesn't progress to diverticulitis and you can do that with diet.

i am terrified. is this going to reveal colon cancer when i have the colonoscopy? will this turn into colon cancer? even the 2nd doctor i saw today was mad at me for even wanting to get a colonoscopy....she only reffered me to get one to put my mind at ease. she kept asking me why i was worrying about something i did not have. i have looked online about pancolonic diverticulosis and i find nothing. my life is now miserable. i lost my motherto lung cancer last year.. now here we go again...

Tnman, it's nothing to panic about, nor to be scared about. The main thing would be to find out exactly how much of the colon is involved. A lot of people have diverticulosis and never know it unless it progresses. Diet is a 'biggie,' as if knowing what the symptoms are should it go from -losis to -litis and what you should do if that happens.

I'm not trying to scare you - I'm just fairly blunt.

Get off of the alcohol. Find out about using a high fiber diet.

The only thing I'd really push the doc about is the extent of the pandiverticular problem. It's one thing to have diverticulosis at the sigmoid colon, which is where most people end up getting it. But it's another thing if the pocketing is very extensive. So you need to calm down and find out the facts.

There's really nothing that can be done for the condition, other than diet at this point in time. One thing you might want to query the doc about is the use of IBD-type drugs to knock down any infection should the -losis go to -litis at some point in time. The usual treatment is to hit the condition with antibiotics, but some studies are now suggesting  that IBD-type might be helpful - just a thought.

thanks for your response, I did as you told me too and I wen to see my doctor. He told me that I just needed to regulate my diet and that I had already had a good workup. He said that he had diverticulosis as well and basically showed me how the stomach worked. He said to make sure I didn't eat anything like seeds and nuts etc that it would get trapped in the sacs and basically rot and cause infection. Also told me that alcohol wouldcause it to flareup as well and I have been drinking a lot of alcohol lately.. Otherwise, he didn't act like it was a big deal.Just that I needed to watch my diet, but he did tell me that if the pain did not subside to come back and I would need further testing. I asked him if this could be cancer and he said no.
So, what do you think? CalGal, you really scared me this morning. I hope this isn't anything to be scared about. please tell me if it is. i hope the doctor wouldn't have lied to me. please advise..... thanks

Tnman, this basically says that you've got pancolonic diverticulosis which is considered fairly rare. It basically means you've got a large proportion of pocketing in a lot of your large intestine. That could account for the discomfort you're currently feeling. Call you doc on Monday and discuss it.
