Each of the PPIs is made to work on a slightly different step in the chain of making acid and secreting that acid into the stomach. Whether or not one med works better for a single individual will depend on how well it 'recognizes' and inhibits that step of the chain in your system. For some people nexium may work more effectively, or others it would be one of the others made by a different drug company. The only way to know is to try the med your doc prescribes and wait-to-see how you respond.

If, after several weeks, you find you're still having problems, bring it to the attention of your doctor. A change of dosage or a change in the type of medication may help. Don't let anyone tell you they're all alike. They're not.

You may want to team the medication with a change to a GERD-friendly diet and make some life-style change. For some, medication alone may not be enough.

According to online sources -

"Nexium(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001062)and Pariet(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001068)are both drugs that are classified as Proton Pump Inhibitors. These drugs help to reduce the production of stomach acid allowing patients to recover from acid reflux and ulcers.

Both drugs are in the prazole family of medication, indicating how similiar they are chemically. One difference between them is that Nexium is often prescribed to help people who frequently take NSAIDS (Nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs). However, for the most part they are similiar medications that have similiar effects on the human body.

That having been said it is quite possible that one drug may be more or less effective then the other. Talk to your doctor about which of the two is best for you."
