Cold sores/ HSV 1?

Recently I have been reading a lot about cold sores/HSV 1.  I have read that it is extremely common (about 70 % of the population are carriers for the virus) and it is usually acquired as a child. Anyways, once in awhile (since I was about 10) I have gotten cold sores by my mouth. I am confused because I had read that eventually after getting HSV 1 your body develops antibodies to protect and prevent the virus from spreading. If this is the case why do I still get cold sores? Shouldn't the antibodies prevent/stop them from occurring?

Thanks!

Your body does develop some types of antibodies, but they really only are reactionary.  You still are able to have outbreaks due to lapses in health, i.e. getting other illnesses that bring down or stress out your immune system.  When this happens the HSV1 see's it opportunity to comeback.  Then your body responds and the whole process starts over again.  By the way, when ever you feel the slightest of twinges of one coming on get some lemon balm (in a 1 ounce bottle with a dropper) drop some on a q-tip and gently rub that into the suspect spot.  Do this at least 3-4 times a day.  I have used this method for the past 8 months or so and it has worked!  I also take BHT daily (250 mg a day for the past year) and haven't had one since!  Diet and exercise will also help too!  Best of luck.
