Fever and Blood Count

Hi

I was affected by fever, cough and cold for last two days. I consulted Doctor on Friday (22nd Nov 2013) and he prescribed medicine for couple of days. I consulted the Doctor again today because I don’t get complete relief from fever and cough. He advice to do blood and urine test. After test my Platelet count is 2.8 Lakhs and TC is 4400 CELLE/CUMS. He checked the test result and retest after two days. He said that PC and TC level are low. May be Dengue/Viral fever. Can u advice me?

In general, except when fever is exceptionally high, the last thing you want is "relief from fever". The elevated blood temperatures are part and parcel of the immune response system. Many organisms can only replicate within a narrow range of temperatures. There are other helpful effects of fever. Exceptionally high fever can indeed cause brain damage, but this is rare. Unless you have a critical job where alertness is essential (police officer, pilot etc.) and you must get to work, there are good medical arguments against use of acetaminophen.

A clinical examination is necessary for accurate diagnosis and management of your condition. From your symptoms it seems that you are suffering from flu or respiratory infection. Your blood counts are on the lower side and platelet count is normal. Low counts can be due to viral infection and also seen in enteric fever. Take acetaminophen for fever and medicines for symptomatic relief. It is important to correlate test results with clinical findings.
