Random hand/thumb aches

48 year old.

Been getting these deep random aches in only the left hand.  I'm left handed.

Wouldn't say hurt.  More like discomfort.

Most often would feel it in the base of thumb.  Dull ache that I could exacerbate by extending.  Feels very deep like it's in the bone.  Ache where it's like you've been hit by a hammer and then the next day you can still feel the lingering effects -- that kind of ache.  Was learning piano and quit because stretching my thumb would bring it on.  That was about a year ago where I thought a month off would cure it.  It's been going away and coming back ever since.

However, at different times will feel the same dull ache in different locations:

in the base of the first finger, joint, on the palm side.

In my wrist at the base of the hand, expecially the lower ball of the thumb where the hand meets.

The middle of the hand just bellow where the fingers attach.

Random aches all over hand.  Just about anywhere.

Sometimes when I'm at the computer keyboard or playing guitar for two minutes I'll get that ache in my hand.

In addition I've been catching myself sleeping on that arm from time to time and the two smallest fingers will go numb.  Had been doing that for years, but am trying to avoid that from here on out.  Not sure it this was the cause.

If I talk on the phone and bend elbow my hand will hurt, or go numb...though it's hard to sort out if it produces the ache above as usually my hand was aching beforehand.

Anyone have any idea what this would be?  Arthritis, carpal tunnel, tendoniditis, other?

Not sure who I should see -- neurologist or someone who specializes in arthritis.  Talked to my primary physician during a recent physical visit and he waved it off.

Hello,

It could be carpal tunnel, or a type of nerve entrapment. I suggest seeing a chiropractor, I have had similar issues, mine adjusts my wrist and it feels so much better. Also, while healing, try wearing a wrist brace and at night, soak it in some Epsom salts, the magnesium will help with any spasms that might be present.

Can try wearing a wrist brace that keep thumb less mobile.

Also, coconut water high in potassium.
Make sure your vitamin D and magnesium blood levels are good

Will try the bananas.

Nerve entrapment.  Is there likely source, elbow, shoulder where there might be stretches, exercises to stretch out?

It could be nerve entrapment, but more likely potassium depletion, which sometimes cayuses these aches. Try eating a couple of bananas.
