I went to the doctor about my tongue and it is NOT left tongue deflection, it is from only chewing my food on the left side for the last three years... LOL!! Who would have known that could have caused that.. Too funny! The stuff we find to worry over..

Are you still feeling really sleepy all of the time? Anxiety? I know its been 6 years since you posted this, but Im just curious. My mother just noticed my toungue going to the left. I also have been chronically tired for years now and bad anxiety. Also in PT this week I realized that the right side of my arm and back have some noticible degree of numbness. This morning I just learned about this stroke or TIA possibly and found your post. Im just curious.

Left tongue deflection when extended is characteristic of lower motor neuron disorder and unilateral paralysis of the 12trh (hypoglossal) cranial nerve.

It is a pathalogical indication that must be evaluated as soon as possible by a neurologist and both an MRI and an MRA taken.

I am 39 but I have no other symptoms of a stroke, It only goes to the left when I stick it all the way out. When I stick it out normally it is fine, I will call my doctor on Monday, I am so tired of everyday I have another weird symptom, did I mention that I have really bad anxiety and panic attacks, as well as I am a hypochondriac, I have seen by Neurologist, and three other specialist as well as two family doctors, I am not sure when the tongue thing started as I deal with strange symptoms everyday, I just noticed the tongue thing, I have had a brain scan and countless other thest.

Have you been tested for Lyme disease?

Tongue deflection is a hallmark of supranuclear neuropathy of the 7th, and often the 12th cranial nerves. It is often a presentation associated with a stroke.

An individual with such a presentation requires both an MRI and an MRA.

A certain percentage of patients exhibit tongue deflection with a normal MRI and MRA. In such a case diabetic neuropathy must be ruled out.

In some cases the tongue deflection continues with no apparent neurological deficit and the cause of the palsy cannot be definitely determined.

In any event, you require an evaluiation by a neurologist.

My tongue also deflects to the left. I have chronic Lyme disease, has anyone heard of this being associated with Lyme?

Please don't cry, the first thing to do if you are really concerned is to go to the ER.  I didn't notice your age, but if you are really young, a stroke seems unlikely though I am sure anything is possible.  Could it be a muscle cramp in your tongue?  That is an unusual symptom that only a doctor could figure out.  If you have any symptoms compatible with stroke, it seems wise to have it checked out by a doctor.  Good luck and please don't get yourself upset without looking into it.  Try to stay calm.  I will be thinking of you.  Sharon
