Why am I never tired?

Hello, I am 23  years old male.  I just have a weird question about overall health?  Ok, I usually workout 3 times per week, work landscaping during the week, and also am a college student full time.  I have a healthy diet here and there, I take fish oil and Alive multivitamin every morning with plain oatmeal and oj for breakfast.  Do you find it wierd that I dont need coffee ever to get energy?  I'm never tired  till like 1 AM and after I take my vitamins I seem to have lots of energy all day.  I dont drink coffee or any caffiene, my parents drink atleast 4 cups per day.  Is this normal for me?  i mean... I know Im only 23 but a lot of 23 yr olds i know drink coffee and other stuff for energy.   Thanks all...

Hi,

Interesting question!
The amount of sleep needed for different individual is dfferent. though its generally said that an average healthy man need around 6-8 hours of sleep, the amount of sleep needed per se could vary a lot.

There are several reason for increased energy, but usually if its just due to excess hormone ( one it wean of ) you will feel more tired.. like for example fight and flight hormone help in overcoming a danger but after that u will feel exhausted. There are so many possibilies for these ( hyperthyroidism ( though individual could feel tired and irritable, palpitation in increased adrenal condition ..so on.. Also a condition called mania where there will be excessive energy (unbottomed or inexhaustible energy) with no need for sleep. But usually along with that normal functionality will be usually affected with lack of concentration and ablity of function. As long as you are functional with no other physically, social or emotional problems most probably you could be a normal variant. But the best way to overcome aprehension is always by seeing a doc.

Hi Ryan,

There may be many reasons for your lack of need for sleep. I'm 26 and I have more than a few illnesses, unlike you who reported that you are healthy. Working out can give you energy, as well as the vitamins and especially the Omega 3 (Possibly Omega 6&9 depending on the specific brand) in the fish oil you take. Also, oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate (slow burning energy) and orange juice contains vitamin C among other nutrients which can build up the immune system and in turn give energy. I went to college and lived in the dorms- I don't know if you live on campus, but that can also have something to do with not being tired until 1 am (other people not sleeping till then). I have a sleep disorder and don't sleep much, hardly ever at night.

A medical cause I can think of is Adrenal function. The adrenal glands release the hormones epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) along with corticosteroids and a couple of other hormones (aldosterone hormone and androgenic steroids (androgen hormones). The first two hormones are responsible for, in your case, energy through different bodily functions. If you have overactive adrenal activity, blood pressure and/or pulse rate are usually raised as well as always being in the "fight" mode-i.e. fight or flight. (I have a ridiculously high pulse rate from over-release of norepinephrine and adrenaline and take meds to keep it in check, which really doesn't work all the time). Another reason could be like jennjenn93 stated, younger people usually do have more energy (as long as the person is fairly healthy and active, such as yourself). I wouldn't take it as a bad thing. Coffee or the caffeine in coffee and other drinks can be counter-productive causing fatigue thus increasing the need for more after a while (it's also addictive), so it's a good thing you're not drinking coffee. Sleep is necessary for many things and it seems that when your body is tired, you fall asleep. If you have any other problems, high blood pressure, increased resting heart rate, anxiety, insomnia etc, then I would suggest seeing your PCP (primary care physician) and maybe asking her/him this question. Hope I was of some assistance.
