Why am I the only one that can smell them?

Hello,

I have 3 people in my office that reek of body odor to me. The smell is very similar to that of halitosis but I know their smell is not coming from only their breath.

I have one of these people sitting next to me. He's super kind and sweet so it's hard to hate on him but my goodness, he REEKS. Sometimes he's just sitting there and it smells like someone put a fan on him blowing in my direction and he smells PUNGENT. Most of the time, I just get random moments where I can smell him. Sometimes if he's sitting in his chair facing me, the odor is strong until he turns away. I have to pretend to get hot and fan myself because I can't stand the odor. I've tried using scented candles and such but his odor overpowers all of that.

2 other people in the office smell like this to me and I've found thru talking to my other coworkers, that I'm kind of the only one who can smell them. A few people here and there have confirmed that 1 or 2 of these 3 people smell so I know I'm not the only one...and they've all been in close proximity to each other. And there is that ONE coworker that NOBODY BUT ME can smell.

I tried looking online for some things but there's nothing specific to my situation. Most people are complaining about their own smell...not why they might be the only ones to smell their peers' with bad body odor.

Does anybody have any insight to this? My only theory is that there are studies done to prove that if your partner smells good to you, you are biologically compatible, you're in love, etc. So maybe my body is telling me that these people are NOT good for me biologically...? Not sure...

That is an interesting observation about the studies - I have heard of this as well. I assume you are female - it is well known that females have orders of magnitude more sensitive sense of smell than males do (generally) and that may just be what it is in your case - your sense of smell is a lot more sensitive than anyone else in your office. Unfortunately there is no "reference smell" that anyone can compare themselves to - or any sort of meter that can determine what a smell is :(
