Why do my ears pop when I use an ice pack to relieve a migraine headache?

I have noticed this for a while and can't figure out the true cause. I use I've packs on my head to aid in the treatment of my severe migraines and I have noticed that everytime I place the ice pack on my head my ears pop on both sides. I can actually feel the build up from the back of my head going up to my ears and then there is a huge pop. I assume the coldness maybe relaxes a nerve and causes this am I correct or could it be something else causing this? I should add that the release in pressure does not seem to relieve my headache much. It feels like it comes up from my cervical spine and brain stem up to my ears. My ears do not feel stopped up before applying the ice pack though. Also it doesn't just happen if the ice pack is just on the back of my head, it happens no matter where I place the ice pack. Could it be something is wrong? Any insight on this is greatly appreciated.

I would say it could very well be the difference in temperature that is affecting the pressure, but honestly I can't say I've had that happen or had the need to put an icepack on my head, back yes, head no.  You could start by asking a pharmacist if this is a common thing, I'm sure they see a lot of things or are familiar with a lot of these types of things.  Saves you an immediate doctor visit.  But if it persisted I would definitely bring it up with my doctor asap.  If you think it's spinal and not simply ear popping then right away.

swelling and pressure will go down with cold. your Eustachian tube, (which connect your ears to your sinuses, are probably popping. i dont think it can cause any damage. the head ache is probably from tension in your neck. try ibuprofen to help with the swelling, vs Tylenol for your head aches. sorry u hurt, but you shouldnt worry too much about the poping
