sudden change from normal to hypothyroidism

I had my annual physical and I am 50 and never had low thyroid. It was up from 2.2 to 3.2 for some reason. Can you get older age onset low thyroid at my age. I have no other symtoms. No weight gain, tired but I take a strong antihistamine daily (side effect is fatigue) so before the antihistamine I was less tired. The doctor examined my thyroid and I don't have any lumps or abnormaliites. I had a CT scan of the throat about 6 months ago and that was normal. I don't know if  the CT went as far as the thyroid but I think so.  I am getting retested in 4 months. I did have a viral infection when I had my blood drawn and was thinking it could be that. Also, my blood protein was slightly high.
thx,

I am late 40's and my doctor has been watching my thyroid closely as she says she has a lot of female patients in middle age who start to show reduced thyroid function.

I used to take heavy duty antihistamines, too, but I found that I don't need them anymore.  Two things made a difference....accupuncture and 5 years worth of allergy shots. I went from a HIGH grass allergy to a mild one.  The accupuncture was a surprise.  I went for something else, and I didn't belive the accupuncturist when she said she would treat for my allergies, too.  I was very surprised to find that was my best allergy season ever, even as many others complained about how bad it was.  Without the antihistamine, I don't drag as much. I am sure it was contributing to my fatigue.

My last TSH was fasting. I'm rechecking in October. Also, my cholesterol went down (new healthier diet). Do you mean if the cholesterol goes up it can cause the TSH to go up too?
Thanks,

They should recheck it with a fasting test.. also have them check you cholesterol .. if that goes up sudden it can cause this.. Several different blood tests should be done over a period of time to see if this is something that needs further treatment.

Hi and thanks for your reply. It seems like more people are telling me that they are getting hypothyroid in middleage or near menopause. Are you on thyroid meds now?  As for the antihistamine, I'm not on it for allergies it is to lessen the number of migraines. I am taking a generic med called cyproheptadine that my neurologist gave me. It lowers serotonin. I have been skin tested for a lot of allergies and they all came up negative except the mold came up later.  So, I'm not sure what I'm allergic to except for dust and topical antibiotics. I did get accupunture for my back pain and I got a couple of days of relief out of 6 months treatment twice a week. So, I don't know how well I respond to accupunture. I also have rosacea and eczema now. I can't take the doxycycline it gave me a bad reaction. So, I don't know..
thanks,
