Ditto to the above comments! If a cardiac work-up doesn't reveal anything, and if this happens again (please call 911 if it happens again! -Sometimes medics can see a heart problem on their monitors before it goes away again) it may be esophageal spasms causing the problem. My GI Dr handles these by having the patient gulp ice water. -I guess the shock of the cold relieves the spasms...But it is nothing to mess with -the worst-case scenario could be the worst day in your life if you ignore the problem....~MM
Yes it can cause chest pain but since yours was so severe, I would get to the nearest hospital immediately to have a full cardiac check up.

Gas can cause chest pain, but, when it is like yours, I would get it checked NOW.
