Damage to the spine is a common side-effect of long-term steroidal use. That is why asthma treatment nowadays uses low-dose inhaled steroids, rather than oral steroids, which are systemic.

Opiates don't work too well for spinal pain because the problem is glial cell stimulation which don't have opiate receptors.

You need to get a consult with a pain specialist. Ask them about using transdermal lidocaine patches or an electrical TENS device.

Consult with your physician as to whether they would put you on formoterol fumarate inhalation powder, which is non-steroidal. One brand name is Foradil. Two inhalations a day 12 hours apart are sometimes recommended. Some peooe have problems with  drug, but others find it provides one hundred percent relief from chronic asthma.

I presume that you are on prednisones for your severe asthma.

If you are worried that using this has damaged your bones, you should speak to your doctor about this.  If may be that you need to have calcium and Vitamin D (this helps the body to absorb calcium) replacement.

Do not stop taking the prednisones until you speak with your doctor.

The damage to your 3 vertebrae may just be coincidental.

Make an appointment with your doctor and discuss your concerns with him.

Hope you get on OK.

Best wishes.
