anxious

Dear Dr JC, Joggen, Lizzie

Severe symptoms and  straight from the book...Im having trouble convincing myself that my 12 week negative is conclusive and continue to be anxious and quite dazed.

1) Since my symptoms started  late and only 5 weeks elapsed between symptoms and my 12 week test, Im now afraid that the 3rd gen elisa I took @ 12 weeks,  was somehow compromised and did not pick up a low level of antibodies. Or maybe my immune system is relatively sluggish.

2) In countries where 3 mths is considered conclusive in most occupational exposures, it seems that those with flu/ARS-like symptoms within the first 3 months are advised to report back and may be followed up longer?? Does having ARS like symptoms make my 12 week test inconclusive?

You have been advised over and over of your "actual" vs. "perceived" risk. You as a Physician should understand the reality and science on which I personally have spent extensive time with you. Your fears do NOT equal reality.

You can ONLY be diagnosed with ARS , after being diagnosed HIV +, which you have NOT. You have obtained NEGATIVE HIV antibody test results OUTSIDE of the WINDOW PERIOD. You are NOT a "rare" LATE SEROCONVERTER due to your :Amount of Serum Exposure or the Route of Transmission". It is once and for all, time to Accept that you were NOT infected with HIV , DOCTOR.

ever heard the saying, "nothing changes if nothing changes" ? ? ?

get off the internet searching for answers that you already have.  YOU DO NOT HAVE HIV.

1) What this means is that your symptoms cannot possibly be due to HIV. The reasons for this are:

1. ARS symptoms almost ALWAYS come on 10 days to 3 weeks after exposure (never longer than 4 weeks), and last 1-2 weeks. It is not possible that your symptoms are HIV-related, since you experienced your symptoms too late after the exposure.

2. Most important, you had an antibody test at 12 weeks, which is conclusive proof that you were not infected.

2) Sorry, you are grossly misinformed on this. 3 months is conclusive regardless of whatever symptoms one may experience. Symptoms are never used to diagnose HIV infection in any way, shape, or form, including the interpretation of antibody tests. Your 12 weeks test is COMPLETELY RELIABLE.

You are HIV NEGATIVE, and whatever symptoms you have experienced were due to another cause. ARS symptoms are completely non-specific and very similar or identical to a variety of other conditions, including many common (i.e. non-HIV) viral infections. Further, often people's emotional reaction to their 'exposures' drive much of what they experience as symptoms.

You are at the point where you need to let this go. HIV is very difficult to transmit. Transmission through occupational exposures such as the one you presented to the HIV Prevention Community (i.e. exposure to highly diluted sample) don't happen, and your test result proved that.

Your continuing anxiety is your only health concern, and you should definitely consider getting under professional mental health care to treat it if it continues.
