*** Help *** Please analyze this Weird HIV test results!
A friend of mine took a random HIV test, the ELISA blood test at a diagnostic lab and the result came out positive. Completely aghast, my friend took a retest at the same lab and went to two other hospitals to get tested. One of the two hospitals conducted the ELISA on two separate kits, both these kits reported negative results.The other hospital too reported a negative result. The lab however did an oral ELISA alongside which also came negative, but the second ELISA blood test that they conducted came out positive as in the first test they administered.
On consulting the doctors at both the hospitals and the pathologists at each of the labs, the doctors concluded after consulting that this was a case of false positive as the ELISA kit in the lab tested for only antibodies and not specific HIV antigens. However all the doctors advised a Western Blot Confirmatory test to be sure.
The hospital sent this to an independent testing facility and the Western Blot came out negative or non reactive for both HIV 1 and HIV 2 antigens.
What is the conclusion?
Two hospitals conducted a total of three ELISA tests which came out negative
The Lab conducted ELISA blood test twice that came out positive
The Lab conducted ELISA oral test which came out negative
The Western Blot Confirmatory came out negative or non reactive for both HIV 1 and HIV 2
5 of the 7 tests have shown negative results or non reactive results while the lab gave a consistent positive ELISA report. Out of these 5 tests, 2 are from different hospitals, from the remaining three - One from an Oral ELISA, two from an ELISA blood.
Can my friend safely conclude the HIV status to be negative?
Friend is married, monogamous and low risk group with no other sexual partners.What is the probability that my friend has HIV and if so can it be passed on to my friend's partner ? As my friend is monogamous, I do not think there is a possibility for seroconvertion as there was no sexual activity with her partner the past 3mmonths - Is my analysis correct?
All the ELISA and Western Blot Tests were done within a span of a week and mostly all these tests were conducted concurrently.
Your analysis and advice will help my friend be at peace of mind.

From a clinical perspective, The NEGATIVE ELISA's trump the POSITIVE ELISA's. The WESTERN BLOT TRUMPS ALL ELISAS.
- As long as your tests were performed 3 months post last RISKY INCIDENT, you are CONCLUSIVELY NEGATIVE.
