HIV - is testing after 8 weeks accurate?

I have read that you should wait 3 months from possible exposure to get HIV tested.  Is 8 weeks enough?  I was tested after 8 weeks (negative).  I'll get tested again after 12 weeks but I'd like opinions on how long is really needed.  i know that in a few cases 6 months may be necessary but I've also heard a couple of opinions from informed medical people that 8 is enough. I get the feeling that the 'official' time is 3 months but that the reality is less.
