HIV risk?

Hello everybody,

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if this exposure was any real risk for HIV infection. About 16 days ago I engaged in a sex act with a transsexual in the Philippines. She performed unprotected oral sex / hand job on me several times, and later I found there was a slight lesion on my foreskin due to the roughness of it. We also attempted anal sex twice (with a condom)  but it wasn't working so we gave up and finished with her giving me a hand job. She performed more unprotected oral sex on me the next morning. My real concern is that one of the times we attempted anal sex she pulled the condom off me (not while I was inside, after I'd withdrawn)  then I put it back on to try again. I was drunk, and could not tell if it was inside out after being very briefly inside her. Is that a risk for HIV infection?

I am currently experiencing some symptoms such as, nasal congestion, slight cough, light headedness, mild aches in arms and legs. no fever (well I don't think so, don't have a thermometer handy) and loss of appetite (though I think the appetite reduction is due to the doxycycline I am taking for malaria prophylaxis as this occured throughout the whole trip) and was wondering if this could be ARS? I read on the expert forum that cold symptoms such as nasal congestion rule ARS out, which was reassuring but am not sure if I understood correctly...

I will test in a few weeks for the sake of it as I am overdue for one and to reassure me, but what do you ladies and gentlemen make of it?

Regards

You cannot diagnose HIV with symptoms, but it doesn't' sound like ARS.

ARS is usually associated with a fever an overwhelming majority of time. I think I once read a post by Dr. Bob of thebody.com say that it occurred 97% of the time with ARS.  On the other hand, depending on what study ARS occurs only 40% - 90% of the time.

So that's the problem with trying to diagnose HIV with symptoms.  You just never know.

Ok thanks for your input.

I just tested this with an unused condom and it seems very difficult to invert one once it has been unrolled, so I can't imagine that happened after all. Also, the penetration was almost non existent, more like pushing against her anus, I don't believe there was actually any insertion.

Any opinion on the symptoms?

But, as you say, I will test at 4 weeks regardless.

Your risk is difficult to estimate.  The only concern is that you claim you used the condom, then may have put it on in such a way that you could have introduced infectious fluids on your penis.  So this would not be the correct use of a condom.

It would be a good idea to be on the safe side and test in 4 weeks with a 4th gen HIV test.  It'll most likely be negative.   But the odds are greatly in you favor that it will be negative.
