Risk and next course of action

Dear Doctor,

Exactly 7 days ago, I had unprotected vaginal sex with a female sex worker for about 1 minute. The whole event was like this, I was using a condom at first but it was hard for me to finish the job. She asked me a few questions about my sexual life then she recommended me to do it without the condom to finish the session faster.Without much thought I did it, and it was stupid. Anyway, today,7 days later, after sleepless nights, I looked her up and we both did a Home HIV rapid test kit together. Both our results was negative. My question is, am I still exposed to the danger of HIV infection as even though she is negative today? As the home test kits recommend testing at 30 days and 90 days. I find that she has a probability of HIV infection but just its not showing. I guess the part of her being a sex worker is why I am having doubts. I hope you can advise on what to do next. I am getting nervous and paranoid.

The p24 is only relevant at about 4 weeks, that is why a DUO test is not for testing at 12 weeks, just an antibody test.

You will be able to obtain a conclusive negative test result 3 months post exposure.

Okay, just got the results back, HIV I and HIV II Antigen & Antibody non Reactive, exactly 28 days after exposure. I guess, I supposely have 99.89% confirmation of a negative. Betting on the last 0.11% for another 12 weeks to have conclusive results. Just for thought, were there any recorded cases where a 28 days HIV DUO negative result turned positive at 12 weeks? Not asking for a statistics here, just wondering if it ever happened before?

I am exactly at 28 days, 4 weeks, in 3.5 hours time. I am going to take a DUO test at a local hospital. I hope I can be given a last chance. These 4 weeks are the worse days of my life. For the first time in my life, I am begining to understand how people go thru the anxiety and emerged stronger after their ordeal. I also know now, why counsel is important as they are the one who actually help people to get thru the most depressing part of their life. I have the deepest respect for people like lizzie, rainlover and teak for spending time to encourage people to face the test and move on. Well, I hope I get thru this and I will do something in return to the chance given. A lesson well learned if its not a punishment.

Okay guys, 1 doctor here told me that if I am going to take a HIV DUO/ Combo test, that is testing anti-body for HIV 1 and HIV 2 together with p24, it must be done between 4-6 weeks after the risk. After that, the p24 will be inaccurate. I thought I read somewhere here that the p24 antigen DO NOT CHANGE after 4 weeks and remain constant. Can someone verify this? I was thinking of testing at 6 weeks

That's why they make condoms.

That is the thing, no matter what test I do, the final conclusion is still 12 weeks.  And 1 thing I noticed, there is no such thing as a 100% comfirmed free HIV partner unless u are together for 24/7 for 3 weeks. All based on trust. Which maybe not 100% all the time.

What,is it hard for you to wait 28 days to get a result from a DUO that will be 99.89% accurate? Then at 12 weeks you can have final test.

Thanks buddy, I spoke to her and we agreed to test together again at 6 weeks. Hopefully both of us comes out negative, if that is the case, the wait for 12 weeks is less painful and more hopeful. I have certainly learned my lesson and I am going to spend more time appreciating life rather than women. Thanks for your wishes again all of you.

Yea the waiting game sucks! You say you learned a lesson that's good some people don't learn until its too late!! I will pray for you buddy! Lol having a sex Oran is more trouble then it's worth!!! Hahaha that's funny and can be soooo true!! The fact that she was neg is a good sign! But being a sex worker im sure she has had other encounters safe or not only she knows! Life is too precious to act without thinking!! I've been there I'm sure we all have!!  keep your head up be safe and careful. Wish you all the best!

you have a few things going for you...

harder for a man to get hiv from a woman
her negative test result is "promising"
the fact that she was concerned about YOUR status before unprotected sex

with all that being said...testing is the only way to know your status

Seriously people, I am begining to feel that having a sexual organ has more problems than its worth. Anyway just to help me live through these tough days ahead, can anyone help me to estimate given my ordeal, what are the chances I may have a hiv infection? I feel I should prepare for the worse if my chances are high. I am planning to seek counselling early before I sink further into depression. So far, I am using karmaric meditation to suppress my fears but its getting ineffective. Thank you again people for your kindness.

God bless you for all the help you have given myself and others!!!  Your kindness to take time out of your life to help others is amazing thanks again!!!

Thanks people, I am never going to engage in risky sexual activities again. I am going to take the HIV DUO test together with the her at day 30. I hope if both of us comes out negative, my chances of infection is lower. Then wait patiently for the 90 day window period and do the final test. Getting shot is a lot less trouble than his.

Take a DUO at 4 weeks and an antibody test at 12 weeks and that's all you need to do.All the best.

The fact that she is negative today is encouraging. However she could still have HIV which would not have been detected if she has had other risk encounters within the last 12 weeks (the closer the risk encounter to the present day the higher the risk,)

The fact that she is a sex worker is not in itself a reason to believe she has HIV. However a sex worker who allows clients to sleep with them without protection is putting themselves and those clients at risk. I would suggest that, in order to put your mind at ease, you wear protection with all partners and take a further test at 12 weeks, which will provide conclusive evidence of your HIV status.
