automated 3rd generation test

I Just got my results from a private lab. It said total HIV a.b result = negative. They told me it was an automated test, 3rd generation. Like an ELISA but the advanced type? what does this mean?. And does this test check for all types of HIV?

Thanks

No, they are very senestive and I believe will pick up all types that are common and possible they might pick up the very very rare strains as well.

Call the lab and speak to them about the test and methods. They would be the best resource.
