Hiv type 1 western blot

Still confused?? How does a hiv type 1 western blot detect hiv type 2? If I had a negative hiv type 1 western blot how does it rule out type 2? I was advised that it does here on this forum but I'm confused? I was told that it can't distinguish between the two so is it because of cross reacting? Thx

Even if the western blot was designed for hiv type 1?

Because if you were positive for HIV 2 you wouldn't get a negative western blot.
