Potential HIV exposure

A few days ago I went to Prague and got very drunk and had sex with a prostitute. From what I can remember, the sex consisted of oral and vaginal sex and I think it was protected for all of it. I didn't ejaculate in the sex worker, she masturbated me till I finished and the condom had no visible break. I also touched her vagina.

Am I at risk from HIV? I have not slept or eaten properly since the incident and am absolutely petrified. I went to the STD clinic today to see if I could go on PEP but they wouldn't prescribe it for me. They told me to come back for a test in 12 weeks, but I am not going to be able to wait that like. I am considering a test you can do after 10 days (PCR or something) at a private clinic but it will cost me £289. Do you think it is worth it? Thanks

Apologies for posting again, but I have had to come home from work today because I cant stop worrying about this. I was OK until I looked in the mirror in the toilets and noticed my tongue was covered in white bacteria. I got some mouthwash and cleaned my mouth but it came back seconds later. I know you guys cant give me any definite answers but I am at a loss of what to do. I think I am having some sort of breakdown over this.

Thank you, I appreciate all of your advice. I'm going to try and put it at the back of my mind but i'm sure you can appreciate, for someone with limited sexual experience, this is very hard. A whole new world of STD's has been opened to me and I am terrified I am going to be punished severely for one act of drunken stupidity. I will take the £289 I was going to spend on a test and donate it to a HIV charity.

PCR is not used for diagnostic puropses and has a higher false positive rate then other tests. With the anxiety youare experiencing I suggest start with a DUO test at 27 days. Actually I would not even test because you did not have a risk.
And symptoms mean nothing...1 they are not even symptoms of HIV 2 they are too soon to be symptoms of HIV.

Let me fill you in on some of the symptons I have 'diagnosed' myself with over the last few days. Orange tongue and flemmy throat, loss of appetite, nausea, rash on buttocks, swollen glands! I have been told that a PCR test after 10 days is 97-99% accurate.

You have no reason to be worried. Testing at 10 days is useless. If anything have a DUO test at 27 days...but you did not have a risk. Anxiety is making you think you had a risk when you truly know you didn't.

The condom didn't come off as far as I can remember, but my memory of the event isn't great. I am being totally honest with you it's just the details are sketchy in my own mind. I am going to go for the test after 10 days because I am extremely worried now.

I understand your stress and anxiety but only you know what happened because we weren,t there with you.You need to be clear about what happened, either the condom came off and left you exposed or it didn,t.Its that simple. We can,t provide you with accurate advice if you aren,t going to be specific about the details.

The only reason I wanted PEP is for my peace of mind. If it reduces my chances of getting HIV then I would take the side effects for a month. Apologies if this sounds flippant, but this event has taken over my life. I have spent four days, a trip to my GP, A and E, GUM clinic, NHS direct helpline in trying to set my mind at rest but I cant stop dwelling on it.

It appears as though you were protected the entire time, even having consumed alcohol, you would have known if the condom failed you,its obvious. The fact that you can recall that the condom had no visible breaks suggests that your memory of the incident was fine. The reason you were not given nPEP is because you didn,t qualify for it.You didn,t have an exposure with a known hiv positive person.

You didn't have a risk for HIV , you do not need testing...
protected vaginal sex is no risk
oral sex is no risk
masturbation is no risk
