Worried Sick

Hello Im new to this site so I was wondering if there would be anybody out there that can help me out. I am a 19 year old male living in Colorado. About a year ago I received unprotected oral sex from a girl I did not even know and do not know about her HIV status. Only just recently have I been worrying about it. This is the only time I have had any kind of sex in my life, and I keep hearing about how oral sex is a very low risk.  My question is after just this one incident who I even need to get a test after just a single incident of any sex act.  Also on this site i see on some other posts that the doctor will say that the other person probably dosen't have HIV so I was wondering how common is HIV in the states. Thanks for the help.

Firstly, you probably don't need testing. Forgoing a test that will almost certainly be negative is OK.

However, testing is always an option. If you really believe that you need to test for your own mental well being, they by all means, test. It will be negative, and I will try not to say, "I told you so." :)

In the US there are free clinics where anonymous testing is conducted. Planned Parenthood sometimes conducts free tests. You can also get confidential tests in sexual health clinics, and those probably could be found in any major city in the US.

Once again thanks for the help, but just so Im absolutely clear having oral sex one time in my life, and so far never having vaginal or anal sex do you guys think I should get tested anyway to ease my state of mind, and if so where do they have testing at like at clinics or hospitals and if so how much do they usually cost.

From my understanding, there has never been a case of HIV from receiving a blow job.

Yes, HIV is very hard to contract from single exposures. But, I will have to say, that it does happen.

The reason for the disparity is something that I cannot account for. The two sites that I have visited the most, are this one, and TheBody (www.thebody.com) These sites tend to say more or less the same thing. One reason could be the conservative nature of various sites. For instance, if a site is pro-abstinence, then they may inflate risks to have people fear sex. Or, if a site is more in to public health issues, they may inflate figure to promote safer sex. The trick is to read widely, and ask lots of questions.

About the US issue again, it is true, HIV rates are low in the heterosexual community. Most people you have sex with will not have HIV. However, there is a chance they do, so it is not wise to take chances.

I apologize I apologize for not being clear in my last post.  What I meant was how come some sites say hiv transmission for oral sex is higher than what other sites may say.  also this may be another dumb question but is HIV a difficult virus to get.

Alright thanks for the anseres guys, i was even told by my doctor that I would probably not need testing I just felt really paranoid.  Another question I also have and you guys seem very knowlegable and may know about this is how come some sites say the risk for hiv transmission is higher than what other sites may say. Like some sites say there is no risk and that there has been no documented cases, while some sites say that there is a risk. It gets me really confused. As for the HIV in America part, i was just wondering if it was rare in the US because on some of the topics on the  HIV expert forum the two doctors will say things like HIV is rare in America or in sexworkers or that kind of thing, so I was just wondering about that.

I can answer a few of your questions, but not all, hopefully some of the other people on this forum who are more knowledgeable will come to my rescue.

Anyway, for insertive oral, the risk is low to non-existent, so there probably is not need to test. However, if you want to be hyper sure, you can test at 3 months, although I, and most people here, will tell you it is not needed.

You also asked if you need to test after ANY sex act. Yes, you do if you have any type of unprotected anal or vaginal sex with someone with unknown status. While the risk is still small from a single act, it is higher than oral, and requires testing at 3 months.

I am not exactly sure about the HIV infection statistics for the US, somebody else may know. But from a probability point of view, most people you have sex with will most likely be HIV negative.

You do not contract HIV from getting a blow job. Just make sure you use a latex condom for anal and vaginal sex.
