PEP - should I be on it?

Stupidly I had unprotected vaginal sex with a sex worker. I panicked, went to the clinic and was put on PEP within 32 hours. I'm not sure about how large my risk was, and the doctor said my chances were slim but would prescribe to help my anxiety. Should I really be on these meds? She said she was negative but you can never be sure. This was a one-time thing and will NEVER be repeated!

You had UNPROTECTED INSERTIVE VAGINAL SEX which is a risk for HIV.

Yes, I believe you should be on PEP regardless of what that doctor said.

You need to remain on PEP the full 28 days and adhere to the testing schedule during post-PEP follow up. I would consult a counselor at an HIV clinic for this advice and skip the doctor you saw.

It makes no difference what this woman does for a living, you should NEVER take the word of ANYONE regarding their status. A few minutes pleasure is not worth living the rest of your life with HIV. ALWAYS use a condom!

I wish you the very best outcome.
